Where do you think Dallas will be then? Can he suck down to 157 and beat Erisman because it appears that Meade, Benefiel, and Perry have 65-84 locked up for the next 2 years at least...

I haven't seen them wrestle but I've heard Jon Morrison will start at 125. Hopefully Albert White will be back next year.

Where do you think Rupp will be? He wrestled 133 in most of the open tournaments this season. I would guess that means he can no longer make 125. I think Oliver needs to move up to 141, but that probably leaves Parks out, since White looks like a true 149 punder and I can't see Parks beating him out. Looks like some very good wrestlers will be riding the pine (or moving on to another school).

Personally, I would love to see Bailey beat out Meade. I would rather have a kid who gives 110% every match, even if he may not always win in ranking matches.

Sorry about your ex-wife/girlfrind and her constant nagging.(probably should not have dated your sister) I wasnt the one to spell Catoosa...just a casual observer, and noticed your 'dumb' statement. Your next quote, "Yes I am dumb because I continue to listen to your stupid Sooner logic" . I'm sorry Sooner's comments have such a huge effect on your life. It must be difficult looking up to the Sooners so much that your intelligence hinges on everything they say. . Hope Ostate and OU woop up at nationals.

I would like to share some folklore about the Cowboy wrestling program. (I consider the 50s and 60s the Golden Age led by Myron Roderick.) Dick Beattie made our Olympic Team in 1956 at 160 pounds. I think he was from Ponca City. He was not able to compete in Melbourne because of an emergency appendectomy. In the 50s and 60s the stands in Gallagher were made of sheet metal like that found in many old high school gyms. The fans would start stomping their feet to make a loud, hollow sound. There were some cowbells in there, too. Beattie would take to the mat amidst this stomping and the chant of "Bear,Bear,Bear . . . . ." This was Beattie's nickname. Because of his short, stocky build and incredible power, he was nearly impossible to ride. This chant was usually met with a quick escape. He also had a good takedown. I have told many wrestlers, young and old, that if your opponent can't keep you down and he has a takedown, How are you going to beat him? Next: Doug Blubaugh vs. Phil Kinyon.

Oliver notwithstanding I thought OSU came out very well in the seedings. Especially Rosholt and Parks. Im not saying that OSU got favorable treatment, but rather that in many key weights they fall on the more favorable side of the bracket. I was glad to see Maple make it and I thought Patterson got a tough nonseed in Pataky. Bailey is definitely got a tough time with Humphries and Dake on his side, and I Terry is unfortunate to have Metcalf on his side too.

My grandparents moved from Pond Creek to Stillwater 1n 1934. They ran restaurants most notably the Chili Bowl until 1963. It was at the present sight of Eskimo Joe's warehouse borderiung campus on Knoblock. It was during the spring and summer of 1960 that Doug Blubaugh (Ponca City) and Phil Kinyon were battling down the street to see who would make the 1960 Olympic Team. Coaches and wrestlers would often dine at the Chili Bowl. They wrestled 10-12, 1-1 matches before Blubaugh won the spot, 1-0, I believe. Blubaugh then went on to win the Olympic title in Rome along with Shelby Wilson and Terry McCann. Blubaugh was pitted in the finals against Habibi from Iran, a multi-world and Olympic Champion who had never lost a match. He was considered the best wrestler in the world and unbeatable. He threw Blubaugh three times and led 5-0. Blubaugh came back from nearly being pinned to put the Iranian on his back for the pin. With this win, Blubaugh was crowned "The Greatest Wrestler in the World." When talking about who's the greatest of the great, I look at who did this person beat. Even Olympic titles have been won in a less than stellar weight division. Blubaugh beat one of the greatest of all time, so I consider him OSU's and probably the USA's best of all time. He has also been nothing but a tremendous diplomat for the sport at clinics, duals and tournaments. I had the good fortune to visit with him at the 1997 NAIA Championships. My favorite OSU wrestler is still Fugita, but the greatest, in my opinion, is Doug Blubaugh. And, Phil Kinyon, went on to win an NCAA Championship for OSU. He came to OSU, much like Randy Couture, after serving in the military. He was also chosen to participate in the first USSR cultural exchange match in the late 50s in Stillwater. Can you imagine a wrestling room with Beattie, Kinyon and Blubaugh? Even by today's training standards and equipment, all three were very powerfully built. This is certainly what has helped make OSU's wrestling such a fabled sport, nationally and internationally.

I had heard stories about the titanic battles that Blubaugh and Kinyon waged that summer. I met Doug at the recent NCAA in OKC and we discussed one of my early coaches, Greg Ruth a 2xNCAA champ from OU via Lehigh. Ruth was a pupil of Blubaugh's and honed his skills in Blubaugh's garage/shop prior to coming to OU. Don I heard a story once that Blubaugh's and Habibi's son's actually wrestled each other once as well. Can you or anyone confirm?

Don Vest and Light Counter, I've visited with Doug Blubaugh 3 times in the past month. He was at the 6-A Regional in Broken Arrow, the State Championships in OKC, and in Norman for the Big 12. He gets areound !!! He spent most of his time with Papa Varner (ISU) at the Big 12's ;-) Early in my coaching career, I was coaching in Kentucky, and one of our best kids went to Indiana Univ, to wrestle for Doug Blubaugh. That resulted in me working for DB at his "Top-of-the-Nation" wrestling camp. It was located in the hills outside of town, and it was a beautiful set-up. In between clinic sessions DB would put us to work on the development of the camp, which was still in the process of being built. I think the worst job I did was to carry and unroll rain-soaked rolls of sod. They weighed a TON, and were muddy as hell. We'd still be in our workout gear !!!! It was funny to see our "slave driver" boss working along side of us in a muddy blue wrestling singlet !!! LOL ;-) If you have not already heard it, there will be a special dedication at the Ponca City High School Gym sometime in the next year. They plan on erecting 2 life-sized bronze statues of Shelby Wilson and Doug Blubaugh. It should be a very special occasion for the pride of Ponca City and their great wrestling history. I am not sure of all the details, but it will be forthcoming for all who are interested in attending this special event.
